American Oystercatcher (AMOY) Summary: Bodie-Hatteras District has four pairs of AMOYs with nests and four additional potential pairs. Hatteras District has six pairs of AMOYs with nests and four pairs on scrape territories. Ocracoke has two pairs of AMOYs with nests and four pairs on scrape territories.

	4/24	Pedestrian	Two sets of pedestrian tracks were observed in the Cape Point closure. They left the east-side shoreline and traveled WSW through the pre-nesting closure to the Hook.
	4/25	Pedestrian	Two pedestrians entered the South Beach pre-nesting closure from the backside (marsh) and crossed over into the intertidal zone.

American Oystercatcher (AMOY) Summary: From the 23 pairs that nested in 2010, 41 of the 46 AMOYs have been observed on the seashore. Territorial behavior and scraping is being observed in all districts. We currently have five active nests.

	4/19/2011	Pedestrian	Twenty-five fishermen were observed on the shoreline above the waterline inside the Cape Point pre-nesting closure.
	4/19/2011	Pedestrian	As many as 20 sets of pedestrian tracks were observed above the water through the PIPL and AMOY full beach closures/bumpouts on the east side of Cape Point. Many of the tracks overlapped so an exact number of violations was not possible to obtain.
	4/19/2011	Pedestrian	Four sets of pedestrian tracks entered the AMOY closure/bumpout from the shoreline on the east side of Cape Point and ended in the Hook. Drag marks from what appeared to be an ice chest were evident. Another pedestrian entered the closure from the Hook and walked through an American oystercatcher scrape. The tracks stopped near some exposed marine mammal bones and then returned to the Hook.
	4/20/2011	ORV/Pedestrian	ORVs parked south of the by-pass broke string between signs. Pedestrians walked past the broken string and signs down the by-pass for 20 meters and then exited the closure.
	4/20/2011	Pedestrian	Four pedestrians entered the Cape Point pre-nesting closure and walked WSW through the closure into the dunes and continued into the Hook. In doing so they walked within 15-30 meters of two unexclosed PIPL nests.
	4/20/2011	ORV/Pedestrian	More than a dozen bait fish, heads of bait fish and the remains of a filleted bluefish were dumped in the closure behind the "parking area" south of the by-pass.
	4/20/2011	Pedestrian	A fisherman who had walked from the Ramp 45 side of the Cape Point pre-nesting closure towards the Hook was observed fishing from the closed shoreline.

Hatteras	4/20/2011	Pedestrian	Four pedestrian tracks were observed on the west side of the Cape Point pre-nesting closure. The tracks disappeared at the tide line after 50 meters. Returning tracks from the same four pedestrians were then observed exiting the closure north of the entry point.
	4/20/2011	Pedestrian/Dog	Two pedestrians with a dog were walking above the waterline in the AMOY closure/bumpout at Cape Point.
	4/20/2011	Pedestrian	A fisherman was observed at Cape Point with a pier cart.
	4/20/2011	Pedestrian	A man and woman on shoreline fishing inside the AMOY closure/bumpout at Cape Point.
Ocracoke	4/15/11	Pedestrian	Seven pedestrians were observed entering the North Ocracoke pre-nesting closure from the ferry beach.
	4/17/11	ORV, Pedestrian/ Dog	A visitor drove into the closure south of Ramp 59 because closure signs had been lost in the storm from the previous evening.
	4/17/11	Pedestrian	Two sets of footprints entered the AMOY/bumpout closure on North Ocracoke, continued for several feet and then exited the closure.
	4/19/11	Pedestrian	One set of barefoot pedestrian tracks entered the AMOY closure 2.9 miles south of Ramp 59, continued for several feet and then exited the closure.

PIPL Summary: Scrapes have been documented and breeding behavior has been observed on Cape Point and South Point. Scrapes have been documented on South Beach. No nesting has been documented yet this year.

Wilson’s Plover (WIPL) Summary: WIPL breeding behavior has been observed on South Point and a possible scrape was found on 4/10/11.

American Oystercatcher (AMOY) Summary: Forty-one of the 46 AMOYs which formed the 23 pairs and nested in 2010, have been observed on the seashore. Bodie-Hatteras District has observed scrapes for three pairs out of eight potential pairs. Hatteras District has observed scrapes for nine out of 10 potential pairs. Ocracoke has observed scrapes for five out of five potential pairs.

Colonial Waterbirds (CWBs): No breeding colonies have formed.

Wilson’s Plover (WIPL) Summary: No breeding activity has been observed from the WIPLs observed on South Point.

American Oystercatcher (AMOY) Summary: Seventeen of last year’s twenty three pairs have returned to CAHA. Six of the eight known breeding pairs have returned to the Bodie/Hatteras District. One individual’s mate has not yet been documented and another individual has paired up with a new mate. Nine of the eleven known breeding pairs have returned to the Hatteras District. Two individual birds from known breeding pairs have returned, but their mates have not yet been documented. Two of the four breeding pairs have returned to the Ocracoke District. Two individual’s mates have not yet returned and both have been observed with new potential mates.

Colonial Waterbirds (CWBs): No breeding colonies have formed yet.

	4/2/11	Pedestrian	At 1120 one female visitor was collecting shells inside of N.OI pre-nesting closure.
	4/3/11	Pedestrian	Two sets of footprints were found entering the pre-nesting closure on the beach by the ferry parking lot. The prints appeared to be that of an adult and child. The prints entered the pre-nest closure about 10 feet and exited from the same location.
	4/6/11	Dog	Large breed dog prints were found entering the South end of the AMOY closure for Gr14/GrN7. The tracks entered into the closure about 20 feet and were found exiting the closure near the dunes.

2011 Pre-nesting Closure Information Available to the Public

Superintendent Mike Murray announced today that the Cape Hatteras National Seashore 2011 pre-nesting closure summary description and maps have been released and are available to the public on the PEPC website under the Interim Protected Species Management Strategy project at:

Park natural resource staff conducted the annual assessment of piping plover (PIPL) breeding habitat and identified prenesting areas based on current habitat conditions and consideration of PIPL breeding activity in recent years. The pre-nesting areas will be established by March 15, 2011 in accordance with the consent decree. Temporary resource protection areas are established to protect threatened and endangered species, including piping plovers and sea turtles, and for species of concern, including American oystercatchers and colonial waterbirds (terns and black skimmers).

Visitors are reminded that pets must be physically restrained at all times on a leash no greater than 6 feet on all National Seashore beaches.
